Lasers are regulated.
Nuclear is regulated.
Explosives are regulated.
Chemicals are regulated.
Drones are regulated.
But, the most powerful technology in the
history of technology is not regulated?

How has it been bad? regulation
happens when companies decide that they
must make profit at any cost including
human cost. Or not investing into their
own infrastructure until that completely
breaks and harms people, environment,
etc. Regulations happen because
companies/people won't control their
worst impulses and are willing to destroy
whatever they need to to make money.

Regulations happen when a subset of companies holding the most of market decide to consolidate their position and to protect ourselves against emergent competition. They can bear the compliance costs unlike new startups. That's why they are fear mongering with messages like "we almost built AGI", "these professions gonna extinct in X years", or "look, our model is so dangerous, it escaped the sandbox and hacked this and that".
That way, they are getting regulations allowing them to consolidate their power even more. I think push for regulations would harm enthusiasts running something on small GPU farm in their garage the most. And second, it will slow down the pace of innovation in the West to the benefit of China where the regime doesn't care about things like human cost or environment at all.
